Juvenile Justice Training Faculty
Application Requirements

  Probation/Parole Officers Fundamental Skills / Intermediate Skills
And Custodial Staff Training

The OJDDA Training Committee is designated with responsibility to interview and hire juvenile justice staff that will provide training. The Committee recruits, conducts interviews, consults references, and makes selection decisions. In an attempt to diversify our training faculty, we strongly encourage applications from members of our diverse communities.

Qualifications for training faculty:

1. Demonstrated knowledge of juvenile justice;

2. Demonstrated skill and experience in training and education, particularly adult training methods;

3. Commitment to quality programs;

4. Knowledge of best practices in the field of juvenile justice;

5. Letter of Recommendation from applicant's agency director or supervisor.

For Probation/Parole Fundamental/Intermediate Skills Faculty only:

1. Completion of Fundamental Skills training;
2. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and/or relevant work experience in the behavioral science field or course work with emphasis in sociology, psychology, law enforcement, corrections, counseling, social work or social welfare;

Selected members for the training faculty must serve an apprenticeship for one full Fundamental Skills training session, and may be assigned to co-lead sessions for a period of time before assuming full responsibility.

For Custodial Training Faculty only:

1. Completion of the Intermediate Custodial training;
2. An educational degree with 2 years of direct juvenile justice experience and/or 5 years of relevant work experience in the behavioral science field or course work with emphasis in sociology, psychology, law enforcement, corrections, counseling, social work or social welfare;

The combined commitment of OJDDA and OYA resources to develop the training faculty is substantial. It is expected that individuals who join the training faculty will serve for a minimum of two years. Training faculty will be on a 6-month probation period at which time a peer review will be conducted. Subsequent annual peer reviews will occur annually. It is equally important that the employing county/state understands the responsibilities a trainer undertakes and agrees to support the process for at least two years.

Juvenile justice staff interviewing as training faculty are responsible to advise their director or supervisor of time commitments required. Those commitments include a minimum of:

• Teaching Fundamental Skills sessions. These sessions are normally offered twice a year in five-day sessions. In addition, faculty may be expected to attend planning meetings prior to each session. (Applies to Fundamental and Intermediate faculty only)
• Participation in quarterly meetings with the OJDDA Training Committee. These meetings are approximately 4 hours in duration.
• M aintain continuing professional education and keep updated as to current best practices.
• Serve a minimum two-year commitment on the faculty staff.
• Maintain communication and collaboration with fellow training faculty staff.

Faculty trainers receive no additional compensation for serving. OJDDA and OYA administrators agree that membership to the training faculty is a mark of distinction and leadership in the field and adds value to an individual's career. The training faculties are reimbursed by OJDDA for travel expenses connected with trainings including mileage and accommodations.
